Charulatha Movie Review

Charulatha (2012)
Cast : Priyamani, Skanda, Saranya Ponvannan, Seetha
Music : Sundar C Babu
Cinematography : Panner Selvam
Producer: Allu Aravind
Banner: Geetha Arts
Director: Ponkumaran
Rating : 2.5/5

The Film
Charulatha is an official adaptation of the 2007 Thai film titled Fad (Alone in English version) starring pop singer Marsha Wattanapanich in the lead role and directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom.

The Synopsis
Charu and Latha ( both played by Priyamani) are conjoined twins. In the hospital where they get treated, they happen to meet Ravi (Skanda). Both the twins fall in love with him, but he loves only Charu. When the conjoined twins get separated, Charu is found dead. Latha impersonates Charu and tries to get married to Ravi. When she goes to Vizag to attend to her sick mother, the soul of departed Charu starts haunting her. Ravi comes to know the truth which leads to a predictable climax.

The Performances
Priyamani gives a spirited performance as Charu and Latha, clearly showcasing the different characteristics of the two roles she played. Skanda is decent. The other few characters fit the bill.

The Techniques
The story has an interesting premise, but the insipid screenplay makes the narration a pain at both the top and bottom of the spine to watch. Dialogues do not add any value to the story telling. Music is ok and the background score is good. Panner Selvam’s cinematography is the only saving grace.

The Verdict
Charulatha touted as a horror-thriller has neither horror nor is it thrilling. Director Ponkumaran has aborted a pregnant opportunity to deliver a clincher. Priyamani is impressive, but her histrionics are hampered by wayward storytelling.
